Target Audience
This course is designed for residential and vocational program directors and staff, teachers, psychologists, physicians, speech and language therapists. Also appropriate for researchers, clinicians or others interested in adolescents and adults with autism.
Content
Since 1972, Division TEACCH has coordinated the nation’s largest statewide education and treatment program for children and adults with autism and related communication handicaps. With Public Law 94-192 emphasizing least-restrictive settings, more people with autism and other severe behavior, learning and communication disorders are being served in community settings. This has increased the need for comprehensive in-service training. Division TEACCH, a division of the Medical School of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, provides training programs to teachers and other professionals from around the world.
Objectives
- Opportunity for direct, supervised experience in demonstration residential/work setting with clients with autism
- Experience with clients with autism with a wide range of functioning levels
- An intense period of active learning
- Presentations and demonstrations of working with clients with autism
Participants will become familiar with:
- Characteristics of autism
- Assessment of children and adults with autism
- Structured teaching
- Working with families of individuals with autism
- Communicating with individuals with autism
- Independence and vocational training as well as social and leisure training
- Behavior management
Continuing Education Credits
This training has been approved by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for for 3.55 CEU credits.
In order to receive CEU credits for this training, participants must participate in the ENTIRE training, and they must also complete and submit the necessary paperwork required by the UNC-CH CEU office before they leave this training..
Selection
Due to the nature of the program, there are limited slots available for this training. Applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Final deadline for receipt of applications is August 1, 2008
- Complete the attached application form. Be sure to respond to the essay question. Applications received without essay response cannot be considered.
- Tuition payment will be due no later than August 29, 2008
- Mail, or email completed application as indicated. No faxed applications accepted.
- Notification of acceptance will be made by August 8, 2008
- Letters of acceptance will include all necessary instructions regarding payment, hotel reservations, and program details.

Cost
Tuition for 5 days is $1175 for out-of-state participants and $585 for in-state participants. This does not include travel, meals, or accommodations. Three working lunches, one dinner, refreshment breaks, and an evening reception are included. DO NOT send tuition payment with this application. Payment will be due upon acceptance. All fees must be paid in U.S. currency and drawn on a U.S. Bank.
Cancellation Policy:
Registration fees include a non-refundable administrative charge of $25. A refund of the registration fee (less $25) will be processed for cancellations received more than one week prior to the training start date. Cancellations received less than one week prior to the training start date will not be refunded.
Information
Travel:
Chapel Hill is accessible via Interstate Highways 1-40 and I-85. A map will be included with your acceptance materials. Raleigh-Durham Airport (RDU) serves Chapel Hill and is located about fifteen miles away. Please do not make travel arrangements until your acceptance has been confirmed by TEACCH.

Accommodations
Overnight accommodations at reduced rates will be offered to TEACCH Training participants by several local hotels. This information will be detailed in the materials sent to applicants upon confirmation of their acceptance to the training.

The training site is located 25 minutes south of Chapel Hill. Participants will need a car.
