FYI!! A Few Facts about Autism

  • Autism is a developmental disability that is life long.
  • The etiology (cause) is unclear; it has a genetic component that is believed to be further complicated by environmental factors.
  • Autism occurs in 1/500 births.
  • Autism is four times more prevalent in boys than girls.
  • There are about 15,000 people with autism in North Carolina.
  • There are three main areas of development that are affected to varying degrees -communication, social skills, and behavioral aspects.
  • Approximately 70 - 80% of individuals with autism have some degree of mental retardation.
  • "autism - (o-tiz-em) n. A neurological glitch characterized by obscure talents, impatience, extreme sensitivity, determination, frivolity & merriment, concealed intelligence, excessive and/or infrequent speech & tornado-like behaviors that may be acceptable at a fraternity house but are not allowed at the check-out counter. Despite these distinctions, individuals with autism share an occasional smile that will melt a parent's heart."

What is TEACCH?

  • TEACCH stands for Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren
  • In 1972 a group of families came together to obtain services for their children who had a unique set of needs - TEACCH was the result.
  • TEACCH is a state-wide organization and is a Division of the Department of Psychiatry of the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina.
  • There are seven centers throughout North Carolina; each center offers several unique services to its own region, based on observed need.
  • All centers offer services which include evaluations, treatment sessions for families, consultations to schools, summer and vocational programs, and training for professionals (both in and out of state).
  • Fayetteville TEACCH offers several services while families wait for an evaluation, including orientation sessions, `Make-n-Take' sessions, home teaching kits, and seminars.
  • TEACCH emphasizes the individual and develops a program built around the person's skills, interests, and needs.
  • TEACCH has adopted a model of facilitation - to help individuals cope and make senseof a world which is unpredictable and chaotic.
  • Research is another important component of TEACCH.
