Adults and their Families
Diagnostic Evaluation
This is a process during which the adult is tested with appropriate behavioral and/or cognitive measures to primarily help with the clarification of diagnosis and to assist the family with understanding their adult son or daughter and future planning. Parents are also interviewed and an interpretive conference concludes the day. This evaluation is most suitable for adults and parents for whom a diagnosis has not been previously given.
Individual Adult Counseling Sessions
These sessions provide an opportunity for adult to discuss matters of personal importance such as relationships with others or work. The counseling program is short-term (4 to 6 sessions) and goal-directed. It is not psychotherapy or a replacement for psychotherapy. This program is useful for independent adults who are motivated to discuss and work on goals for themselves.
Individual Parent Training Sessions
These sessions provide an opportunity for parents to learn ways of helping their adult son or daughter and to help deal with behavior problems, self-help, and other skills. Sessions are individualized and scheduled every other week, typically for 4 to 6 sessions. The sessions should be viewed as short-term, parent education focused and not therapy for the adult. This program is best suited for adults who need supprt from their parents in their daily lives and for parents who are interested and have time to work with their adult son or daughter at home or in the community.
Parent Support Group
There is a group run by the Chapel Hill Center for parents of adults with autism. This group meets monthly from September through June in Raleigh and covers a wide range of topics. This activity is useful for parents of adults of all ages who are interested in meeting other parents and discussing issues of mutual interest.
Program Consultation
TEACCH staff is available for consultation to vocational, residential or college programs in which there are one or more students with autism. This consultation, provided on a limited basis depending on availability of staff time, can be arranged upon request of the relevant program personnel. This service is useful for students where a diagnosis has been previously made, where parents, adult clients, and program staff are interested, and where TEACCH staff recommendations will be utilized.
Workshops
The Center conducts several workshops during the year including one specifically for parents on Adolescents and Adults with Autism and one on High Functioning Autism. These workshops can be useful for parents who are interested in learning in this type of setting and comfortable participating alongside professionals.
