Target Audience

Content

Teaching strategies will include presentations, lectures, and visual examples of working with students with autism.  Participants will gain hands on experience with various materials in a smaller group, encouraging team problem solving skills.  An overview of the characteristics of autism, informal assessment, structured teaching, communication, and behavior management.

Objectives

* Increase participant’s familiarity with the characteristics of autism and with the learning styles of students with autism.

* Introduce procedures necessary for completing informal assessment in the classroom and developing curriculum goals.

* Introduce participants to the fundamental principles of Structured Teaching and how it is applied in the classroom through the use of physical structure, schedules, work systems, and visual structure.

Continuing Education Credits

The Division of Continuing Education of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has approved this training for 1.1 CEUs.  Participants who wish to receive CEU credit must complete the CEU application form at the training.  The program ends at 4:00 both days, so please plan accordingly.

A limited number of slots are available, so participation is based on a first come, first served basis.  Please return completed application by October 23, 2009 .  Notification of acceptance and detailed map will be sent as soon as possible upon receipt of application.  Due to limited space, receipt of application after October 23 does not guarantee acceptance.

Cost

The fee for this workshop is $140 for North Carolina residents and $280 for out-of-state participants.   School personnel may need to discuss payment with an administrator.  Fee is due following notification of acceptance.

Lunch is on your own, but drinks and snacks will be provided.

Homewood Suites-Durham - This all-suites hotel is conveniently located on Mt.
