Target Audience
Parents and other care givers with children with high functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.
Content
Persons with high-functioning autism (HFA) and Asperger’s Syndrome have been diagnosed on the autism spectrum and have an IQ at or above the average range. Course content includes an overview of the characteristics of HFA/AS including diagnostic characteristics and learning styles. Personal perspectives on HFA/AS will be shared through a video of an adult with HFA. The intervention strategies described will include ways to apply the basics of structured teaching in the home and in special education or included placements, and specialized approaches for teaching coping, social and communication skills.
Objectives
* Develop an understanding of the characteristics of autism as demonstrated in individuals with average IQ scores.
* Develop an appreciation for the perspectives of persons with HFA/AS.
* Learn to identify the strengths and learning styles of persons with HFA/AS.
* Learn how to design individualized and effective procedures to promote the independence and success of the HFA/AS child.
* Learn to develop intervention techniques that promote social and communication skills in these individuals

Cost
The fee for this workshop is $40.00 per person for North Carolina parents, and $70.00 per person for out of state parents. Lunch, drinks and snacks will be provided. Fee is due with your application. A limited number of discounts are available if this is a financial burden for your family.
