Target Audience
Those who work with at least one student who learns on grade level with a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder or an educational classification of autism such as regular education teachers, resource room teachers, inclusion teachers, classroom assistants, CBS workers, school psychologists, behavior management technicians, guidance counselors, and other related services personnel, such as speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, and parents of children with autism spectrum disorders.
Content
This workshop will acquaint participants with learning styles and behavioral characteristics of students with High Functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome from lecture and videotaped interviews with adults with HFA / Asperger's.
TEACCH staff will acquaint participants with educational strategies geared to maximize student's competence and independence to prevent behavior problems stemming from the spectrum disorders and resources teachers can access.
Objectives
During this training participants will learn about:
- The neurological basis of autism spectrum disorders
- The current estimates of frequency of the disorders
- Areas of functioning the disorders affect, how they appear
in daily functioning, how they cause difficulties for students, families, and school personnel - Legal mandates for serving students with exceptionalities
- Structured teaching options for preventing problem behavior which can be more effective than conventional behavior management strategies
- How to implement visual supports to verbal teaching
Continuing Education Credits
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been authorized by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) to award Continuing Education Units (CEU's). CEUs will be available to those participants attending all scheduled activities. Participants arriving more than 15 minutes late or leaving more than 15 minutes early will not be eligible for CEU’s. Your tuition will cover the cost of the CEUs. Licensing boards, certifying bodies, and regulatory agencies may differ in the way they recognize the CEU in fulfilling necessary professional
credit. Participants should contact their local licensing boards to determine the appropriateness of CEUs toward recertification credits.
A certificate of attendance will be provided for participants to use when obtaining credits from their own school systems.
Selection
Due to the nature of this program space is limited and will be assigned on a “first come, first served” basis. Once full, applicants will be put on a waiting list should openings become available.
Registration deadline is October 21, 2009. Payment must accompany application.
