Training staff will include Kathy Hearsey, M.Ed., Kaia Mates, M.S.W., Susan Boswell, as well as teachers, psychoeducational therapists, and consultants from the TEACCH Program.
Target Audience
This course is designed for teachers, psychologists, physicians, speech and language therapists, as well as researchers, clinicians, and others interested in educating students with autism and related communication handicaps.
Content
Since 1972, Division TEACCH has coordinated the nation’s largest statewide public based educational and treatment programs for children with autism and related communication handicaps.With current practices emphasizing least restrictive settings, many more children with autism and other severe behavior, learning and communication problems are being served in public schools, thus creating a need for in-service training activities for teachers. In recent years, TEACCH has made its training activities available to teachers and other professionals from around the world.
Objectives
This program is a 5-day intensive training offering:
• A direct, supervised experience in a demonstration classroom setting
• Hands-on experience with students with autism of varying ages and functioning levels
• An intense period of active learning
• Presentations and demonstrations of working with students with autism, given by TEACCH experts
Participants will become familiar with:
• Characteristics of autism
• Classroom assessment of students with autism
• Structured teaching
• Working with families of students with autism
• Communicating with students with autism
• Independence and vocational training
• Social and leisure training
• Behavior management strategies
Continuing Education Credits
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been authorized by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) to award Continuing Education Units (CEUs). CEUs will be available to those participants attending all scheduled activities. Your tuition will cover the cost of the CEUs. Licensing boards, certifying bodies, and regulatory agencies may differ in the way they recognize the CEU in fulfilling necessary professional credit. Participants should contact their local licensing boards to determine the appropriateness of CEUs toward re-certifi cation credits.

Cost
TUITION FEES FOR THIS 5-DAY TRAINING
$585 for North Carolina Professionals
$1175 for Out-of-State Professionals
Fees do not include travel, meals (except as noted), and/or accommodations. Fees include a light continential breakfast, snacks, and lunch each day. It also includes a Thursday night dinner, materials, supplies and CEUs (if the CEU application is completed and submitted at the training).
Information
Chapel Hill is accessible via Interstate Highways I-40 and I-85. A map will be included with your acceptance materials. Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) serves Chapel Hill and is located about fifteen miles away. Ground transportation is available at the airport.
