Content

Since 1972, Division TEACCH has coordinated the nation's largest statewide public based educational and treatment programs for children with autism and related communication handicaps. With current practices emphasizing least restrictive settings, many more children with autism and other severe behavior, learning and communication problems are being served in public schools, thus creating a need for in-service training activities for teachers. In recent years, TEACCH has made its training activities available to teachers and other professionals from around the world.

Objectives

For years teachers have struggled with developing appropriate social goals for students with autism spectrum disorders.  We’ve learned through experience that students with autism do not typically learn social skills in the same manner as their non-autistic peers. The primary goals of this 1 day workshop are to guide teachers through the process of evaluating their student’s level of social comfort, structuring social activates for success, and finally developing strategies to help their students generalize social skills to various settings and people.  Presentations will include PowerPoint lectures, small group activities and direct observation of students(s) with autism.
