Agenda
Friday, April 23, 2010
8:00 – 4:00pm
Parents and professionals have used Social Stories™ for many years to effectively share social information with children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other social-communication delays and differences. Using lectures, demonstrations, case examples and activities, this one-day workshop:
• Describes the research-based rationale that supports the approach
• Introduces each of the ten characteristics that define each Social Story™
• Shares strategies for introducing and implementing a Social Story™ at home or school
In addition, participants will have plenty of opportunities to practice skills and concepts as they are introduced, and to write a Social Story™ for a child, adolescent or adult currently in their care. This is a fun and fast-paced, upbeat workshop that, in addition to teaching participants to write and implement a Social Story™ provides plenty of positive and practical new ideas along the way.
Presenters
Catherine Faherty, Psychoeducational Trainer, Asheville TEACCH Center
Carol Gray developed the Social StoryT approach in 1991. To protect the quality of the approach and to ensure consistent training, to date 8 people are authorized to teach others to write and implement Social Stories™. Catherine Faherty is one of these individuals.
Target Audience
This course is designed for parents and professionals working on behalf of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Content
Since 1972, Division TEACCH has coordinated the nation's largest statewide public based educational and treatment programs for children with autism and related communication handicaps. With current practices emphasizing least restrictive settings, many more children with autism and other severe behavior, learning and communication problems are being served in public schools, thus creating a need for in-service training activities for teachers. In recent years, TEACCH has made its training activities available to teachers and other professionals from around the world.
Objectives
At the conclusion of training, participants will be able to:
- Describe three cognitive theories that are central to the Social Story™ rationale
- Describe the meaning of “social curiosity” and its practical implications for those working on behalf of children and adults with ASD
- Distinguish a Social Story™ from other visual strategies
- Write a Social Story™ that meets all the defining criteria
