Two highly respected assessment instruments, developed in the TEACCH program, the Psychoeducational Profile-Third Edition (PEP-3) and the TEACCH Transition Assessment Profile (TTAP) have recently been translated into French and Japanese, respectively. The PEP-3 is the popular developmental, educational, and behavioral assessment scale that has been used within the TEACCH program and across the world since the 1970s as a comprehensive measure for preschool to elementary age children with autism. Its popularity in other countries, where few standardized measures have been developed, is confirmed by its recent translation into French. France, historically, has been strongly influenced by psychoanalytic thought and practices, so the use of the PEP-3 represents an effort to broaden the perspective on the assessment and treatment of autism. The TTAP is the revision of the original Adolescent and Adult Psychoeducational Profile (AAPEP) and its translation into Japanese reflects the continuing commitment of that country to TEACCH philosophy and methods.
